The Omkareshwar Temple in Coorg

The Omkareshwar Temple in Coorg is a famous Shiva temple located in Madikeri town. It is known for its unique blend of Islamic and Gothic architecture, built in 1820 by King Lingarajendra II.

Key Highlights of Omkareshwar Temple:

Architecture: The temple has a central dome and minaret-like turrets at the corners, resembling a mosque, which makes it architecturally unique.

Shiva Linga: The main deity is Lord Shiva, and the temple houses a sacred Shiva Linga brought from Kashi (Varanasi).

Legend: It is believed that the king built the temple to atone for a sin he committed during his reign.

Best Time to Visit:

Early morning or evening for a peaceful experience.

How to Reach:

The temple is centrally located in Madikeri town and easily accessible by road.

It can be included in your Coorg itinerary along with other nearby attractions like Raja’s Seat and Abbey Falls.
